Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the magazine published by night people for night people. As you can see, we are still very much under construction. Over the next few months, we will try to provide a one-stop information and entertainment center for those who, like us, are up all night. We will answer some frequently asked questions here. Please email if you have any other questions or comments.

Who is this magazine for?

While we certainly welcome all readers, our journal is generally targeted toward three groups of people:

  1. Insomniacs. People who would like to sleep at night, but can't.
  2. Night workers. People whose circumstances force them to be up at night.
  3. Night owls. People who prefer to be awake at night and to sleep during the day.

Some of our readers might fall into more than one of these categories. Loved ones of night people may also find information in our journal to be interesting and helpful.

Why is this magazine needed?

Today you can find special interest groups and support groups for almost every condition or interest available. If you are a recovering alcoholic, left handed, divorced, or a cancer patient, you can find a support group. There are magazines published for hackers, model railroaders, photographers, and advertising agents. However, a growing segment of our society remains isolated, underrepresented, and stigmatized. We are talking, of course, about night people.

Whether because we choose to be or are forced to be, more and more of us find ourselves up in the middle of the night. We have the same needs as the next person, like dry-cleaning, a good pizza, or someone to love, but we find it much harder to meet our needs. Our society is built around the habits of day people. Night people are frequently considered lazy or undisciplined. But the fact is, most night people have little choice.

Night Writer provides a forum for night people to discuss their difficulties and how to cope with them, to celebrate the benefits of being a night person, and to provide a sense of community to these historically isolated individuals.

What can I expect to find here?

Look for serious articles to the issues that face night people. Why are some of us night people and while others are not? We will discuss the causes and treatment of insomnia. We will profile some of the careers of night people and how they deal with them. Look for lighter articles about late night entertainment. We will have reviews of movies and television programs. We will highlight resources for night people. Who is hiring people to work nights? Where can you find a good pizza at 3 AM? And look for letters and articles contributed by our readers.

How can I help?

Please send us your comments about our journal. What do you like? What do you think needs improvement? How do you think we could improve it? We would love to hear any suggestions on features or articles that you would like to see.

We would also welcome any letters or articles that you would like to contribute. Tell us about how you cope with being up all night. Share with us your home remedy for insomnia. Tell us what it is like to be a night person while raising small children. What do you do when you are awake and the family is asleep? If you are an artist, give us a sample of your work. Are you a poet? Do you write short stories? We welcome any submissions. We want this to be your magazine. We welcome your experiences, pet peeves, jokes, photographs, or whatever else you would like to share with our community.

Another area where we need your help is in the area of resources. We would like to publish the names, locations, and hours of businesses and services that are available in the late night set. Please tell us about the late night businesses in your locale so that we can share these with others in your area. Please send your questions, comments, gripes, and submissions to our webmaster.

Our focus here will be more on content than on presentation, so don't look for stunning graphics or fancy applets for now. As we grow you may see improvements, but our immediate concern is making as much information available as soon as possible.

We hope you enjoy your stay here. Sweet daydreams!
